The Christchurch mail coach left the Bealey this morning one iour after the usual time ; and it is very doubtful, the rivers being high, whether it will arrive this evening or not. We are again compelled to hold over a report of the Catholic School picnic till to-morrow. An accident which was very nearly attended with fatal consequences, occurred at Hayes Terrace yesterday afternoon; A tunnel tail-race became chocked up, and two men, shareholders in the claim, went up from the mouth of the tunnel, and proceeded at once to clear away the stones and gravel which formed the obstruction. After working for some time, the water broke through suddenly, and the two men were swept down the tunnel and thrown violently out on the tailings. The one escaped with comparatively little injury, but John Mahoney received many severe bruises, and was brought to, the Kumara Hospital. The mortal remains of William Thompson, a miner at Larrikins, were conveyed to the Kumara Cemetery this afternoon, followed by a large number of miners. The deceased bad been missing from his home the last few days, and, on a search being instituted, his body was found down an old shaft, where he had evidently fallen An inquest was held this morning, a report of which appears in another column. He was a single man, and his age about 40. We regret to notice that Patrick Byrne, who some days ago was injured whilst erecting some timber to form part of a bell-tower at St. Patrick's School, to-day had to be removed to the Hospital. To-morrow night the Highlanders in and around Kumara will have a special treat. The Rev. Mr Ross, of Otago, at present on a visit to the Coast, will preach to them in their ancient mother tongue, A good gathering- of the clans on the occasi on is anticipated. So far as we know this will be the first Gaelic sermon preached on the West Coast.
