Messrs Allan and Nelly, the two returning officers, who have been all this time in coming overland from Jackson's Bay and Okura, allege that the Blue River, between Haast and Paringa was so flooded that they could not cross, and there is no ferryman stationed there. The body of Credick Bain, the Borough messenger, was found this morning on the North Beach. An inquest will be held on Monday. The steamer Murray was got off the beach with to-day’s flood tide, without injury. Wanganui, January 2. At 6 o’clock this evening a serious fire occurred in Ridgway street, whereby a shop and dwelling bouse occupied by Mrs Rankin, milliner, was completely gutted. The fire commenced in an unoccupied shop under the same roof, and rapidly spread, - Owing to most of the fire brigade being out of town, the water was not got on as would otherwise have been the case, but a number of gentlemen lent willing assistance, and the fire was confined to one building. The premises are the property of W; H. Watt, M.H.R., and were insured, but for what amount is not yet known. Mrs Rankin’s loss must be heavy, as nothing was saved. DunkdiNj January 1.
