ALCOHOLIC GAMBLING DENS.
[to the editor.] Sir—There is at Hillman’s Town one hr two of such dens whose inmates are seldom to be seen before the sun has passed its meridian, but whose musical squee’s ever ending in “ He ! he ! he !’* and** Haugh ! haugh ! haugh ! ha ugh !” are seldom to be missed at or about cock-crow. The keepers of these miniature hells are generally nondescripts, and although not classed in natural history, are invariably prodigies of the tnost cunning stamp; they not only manage to live with a female who becomes their drudge as servant, nurse, lay reader, &c., during the day, but Unfortunately the poor creature has to appear in her best “ bebs ” until the short hours of the morning, and to act the laughing “Hebe 1 ’ to the various Jupiters who frequent the den. The hew Act bearing on these demoralising Suburban night houses should be brought into force, and, if the police were not wanting in their duty, these nocturnal displays would not occur.—l am, <fec., A Day Laborer. Diliman’s Town, Jan. 3, 1882.
