STATE SCHOOL PRIZE FUND.

[to the editor.]

Siri—Now that.l have got my candidate drily elected, allow me to contradict two statements Mr R. j. S. made in his reply* The first is that I was trying to throw cold water on the chi'dreu’s Christmas prize collection; The best answer I can give to that charge is that if R, J. S. felt one-half the pleasure or took one-half the interest in the children's prices as I do, he would never have withheld publishing the balance-sheet for twelve months. Secondly, the statement that he informed the, public from the platform that there was a balance of .£l9 I beg leave to deny, for he most religiously refrained from mentioning any amount. The words he used were that he held a balance, and that some of the committee wanted him to expend it for another purpose, but he would not do so. With regard to how the Rev. Mr Scott should know what balance there was, not being one of the select few of the committee, I suppose one of the select few informed him, and I believe told him the truth. With respect to calling at the Queen’s Arms to see the elaborate balance-sheet, I haidly think it was worth powder and shot, if what we had in the papir' is a fair specimen. In conclusion,' let me state that I consider it very bad taste indeed in Mr R. J. S. inviting thei public in the way be did, knowing full

Veil that the Corrupt Practice Bill had b'eco'tae law.—Yours truly, Inquirer. Kuriiara, Dec. 14, 1881.
