W. A. Barton, Esq., Returning Officer for the Kuinara District, is in town today, making the final arrangements for the election which takes place to-morrow.

Although Mr David Madden lias retired from the contest in the Greymoutli District election, his name will, to the surprise of many perhaps, appear on the voting papers in that district. This is consequent on his not having sent in his formal resignation within the time prescribed by the Act, which should be “ not later than two clear days before the day of polling.”

At the Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning, before J. O’Hagan, and A. C. Campbell, Esqs., J.Ps., Charles M ‘Donnell was charged with having maliciously committed damage and injury to two milch cows, the property of Catherine Ryder, by striking the said cows with stones, setting dogs at them, forcing them into the Teremakau river and detaining them therein, and that he did also cut and wound the said cows to the extent of five pounds sterling. Defendant was fined Is, with costs of Court 9s, £1 damages, and one witness 12s.—A similar charge against Henry Fitzsimmons was dismissed.
