The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1881.

The nomination of candidates to represent the Kumara district in the House of Representatives took place to-day. Messrs E. Blake and R. J. Seddon were proposed. The Returning Officer declared the show of hands to be in favor of Mr Seddon. A poll was demanded for Mr Blake. The polling will take place to-nlorfow week, the 9th instant. We are compelled to hold over till tomorrow the Courts reports. Mr Seddon addresses the electors at Dillman’s Town this evening; Mr Blake addresses the electors at Callaghan’s, also this evening. There were several mayoral elections yesterday. x\.t Hokitika, there were two candidates, Messrs W. L. Fowler, (133) and J. Cross 114) ; the former was elected.—At Greymouth there were two, Messrs Barkley (114) andNancarrow (104); the former was elected by a majority of 10. —At Ross, Mr R. Hirter (61) to Mr J. M. G. Malfroy (50) ; Mr Hirter was elected.---At Westport, Mr Haselden (64) was elected ; Mr Munro had 40 votes. There were a few minor casualties at the fire at Reefton, besides the burning of the unfortunate man Oelsted. Charles Sinclair met with a broken arm ; Messrs Budge and Boers both received cuts on the head ; and David M‘Beath had a hand severely burnt. The heat was so intense that it damaged Cochrane’s Hotel on the opposite side of the street, but the calm prevented the further spread of the fire. Everything was quickly consumed.
