The Resident Magistrate was occupied during the greater part of yesterday afternoon in hearing the charge of gold robbery against Patrick Lennon. The
evidence brought forward showed glaringly suspicious circumstances, but the Court decided that there were no proofs sufficient to commit, and the accused was accordingly dischafged. In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning before H. A. Stratford, Ec>q., R.M., Annie Hall, charged with drunkenness, pleaded guilty, and was discharged with a caution. .•Messrs H. Cameron and J. Bassett announce that, having purchased the coaching plant of Messrs <!assidy and Clarke, they will continue-running tho royal mail coaches between Kumara and Hokitika, two eaoh way dailyj leaving Rugg's Hotel, Kumara* at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., and Cameron's Commercial Hotel, Hokitika, at 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. This arrangement has been effected with a view of meeting the wishes of the residents of this neighborhood in the matter of an application to the postal authorities to give business and other persons time to reply to letters received by the morning mails. In this desire to promote the interests of the public, therefore, the proprietors hope to meet with extended support, assuring them that every attention will be paid to the comfort and convenience of passengers, as well as to the safe and expeditious delivery of parcels and luggage entrusted to their care for transmission. On the application of Mr Guinness, the case of Knopp v. Rugg, a suit for detinue of a horse, and damages, has been ordered to be reinstated, and will come on for hearing on the 30fch inst. Messrs Wade and Spence will hold a sale by auction on Saturday next, at one o'clock, of good useful household furniture, the property of a gentleman who with his family will be leaving for Christchurch in a few days. The present is an excellent opportunity to those who may be thinking of starting housekeeping, as they will find the furniture and effects about to be sold exactly what they require. We (Nelson Colonist) notice that Mr F. Trask has on exhibition at his shop in Collingwood street, some splendid samples of copper ore, and on making inquiries we learn that they were taken from a new lode opened out by Mr Newport, upon his land on the upper part of the Maitai river near the Dun Mountain. The lode is situate about a mile from where he opened out a lode some time back, and it is said that it is evidently a continuation of the lode formerly opened. The deposit, we are informed, has been driven along for some 40 feet, and that the ore has been found to improve the further the men have gone in. The lode is quite three feet wide, and has a well-defined wall of rock, the nature of which we were unable to learn, but were told that it was not of great hardness. An important point in connection with this discovery is that the lode is in a direct line with the Champion Mine in Aniseed Valley. We (Melbourne Argus, Oct. 20th) regret to announce the sudden death of Captain William M'Lean, one of the best-known captains engaged in the intercolonial trade. He was seized with an iipoplectic fit late last evening, while .witnessing a peformance of "The World," in the Theatre Royal, at Adelaide, and died within an hour. He was for many years in command of the s.s. Aldinga and other boats running between Melbeurne and New Zealand. For some time he has been in command of the s.s. Victorian, which is engaged in the South Australian trade. The wife of an old coloured man in the eastern part of Georgia recently presented him with the sixth, the family having been previously endowed with two pair of triplets. All flourishing.
