The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1881.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council, which was to have been held last night, lapsed for want of a, quorum <

The Lyons' Tourists gav.e their second entertainment at the Theatre Royal last evening to another moderate house. The performances all round were even better than on the previous night. The drama of "Conrad and Lizette," or "Tim and Con," afforded Masters Purlato, M'Lean, and Farron, especially the two former, the opportunity of revealing their marvellous dramatic abilities for youths of their age. Parlato as Conrad Schoooollerhoosterotieustein, and M'Lean as Tim Flaherty;" caused a continual roar of laugher. Several songs were introduced, notably by Miss Nina Tulloch, who took the.part of Lizette : Y£n'Weifstein, and Miss Emily Fox. Every/song and dance in the "Musical Olio"f was also warmly applauded, Miss Amy/Horton coming in for the lion's share of tokens of approval. The after-piece "Patchwork," or "Hamlet on a String," was an inimitable display of fooling, and would bear repetition. To-night "An Hour in Seville" and the sparkling burlesque the "Isle of Tulipitam" will be produced. An important word was omitted yesterday from the original manuscript of a paragraph concerning the opening of a bank at G-oldsborough on Tuesday next. The words " a sub-agency of the Bank of New Zealand will be opened at Waimea," &c, should have read " a sub-agency of the National Bank of New Zealand will be opened at Waimea," &c. • Pending further considerations, inquiries, arrangements, &c, on the part of the Postal authorities touching the requisition recently forwarded from this town to have the hour of departure of the southern mail from Kumara despatched at 3 p.m. instead of 1 p.m., instructions have been given for the noon mails to be delivered in Kumara at twelve o'clock ; and the time for closing the return mails to Hokitika and southern offices will bo 12.50 instead of 12.30 p.m. As a candidate for the County Council, Mr Seddon addressed a meeting at Calla* ghans on Wednesday eveniug last. He explained the position of the Westland County Council and the part he had taken for the last three years as a member of that body ; and, after undergoing a severe cross-examination, on the motion of Mere Briola seconded by Mr Steel, a vote of confidence and pledge to support Mr Seddon's candidature was unanimously carried. The same results followed his address to the County Council electors at Goldsborough last evening. .Mr H. W. Sandle will address the electors at Reynolds' Empire Hotel, Dillman's Town, this evening, at 8 o'clock ; when he will discourse on subjects pertaining to the Westland County Council, as a member of which he seeks re-election, being one of the numerous candidates for the Arahura Riding, and for which three members are required. A sixth share in O'Loughlin and party's sluicing claim, commonly known as the "the mtggety claim," is one of the best things probably in the market, the owner haying decided on leaving shortly for Europe. . Particulars will be seen in outadvertising columns. A trotting match took place on Friday last, on the Ferry road, Christchurch, between Mr Johnstone'3 Darkie and Mr William Patteson's bay mare. The stakes were £lO a-side, and the match was won by Darkie by about four lengths. A match at draughts was played on Tuesday evening, the 25th ult., (the Christchurch Press reports), at Leithfiold, between the members of the Amberley and Leithfield Draught Clubs, ten men a-side. No one was allowed to play who had taken part in any previous match. One hundred games were played, of which Leithfield won 58, Amberley, 27, and 15 were drawn. Mr Franks provided refreshments in his usual liberal style.
