Under existing arrangements anything brilliant or able could not be expected to flow from the pen of a person who is contented to fill the editorial chair of our West Coast leading journal, as it sometimes terms itself when the pittance paid is little above that received by a laboring man. “ Cheap and dirty ” is the motto. Half a pint of hoer and an article abusing Seddon, and the cup of joy is filled to overflowing. What an exalted happiness ! How little it takes to please a small mind, and slack a thirsty soul! How aptly do the memorable words of the poet Burns apply—- “ Wad the laird the giftie gie us To see ourselves as ithers see us.” As viewed from an ordinary standpoint by a man of average intelligence the part taken by the Editor of the West Coast Times is simply discreditable, and a blot on journalism. Well misrht it be said —“ What can you expect from Hokitika 1 ? The musical strains that flow from the Eolian harp cannot be expected to flow from the jaws of an ass. If the people of the West Coast are judged by a West Coast Times’ standard no wonder that a prejudice is created against them or that they are set down as an ignorant unprincipled community, and one whose morbid taste cannot ever be satiated. To a person of refined taste the West Coast Times and the name of Seddon are both nuisances, and as such should be treated. A healthy tone of mind is just as necessary as that of health to
