In view of the prevalence of scarlet fever, the City Council have decided to call for applications for health officers. A lad named Obern had a narrow escape from sudden death, having fallen over the cliffs near the Lunatic Asylum. In Abraham’s consultation, Zulu was drawn by a lad in a mercantile establishment who had saved the price of one ticket out of his wages. A daughter of Captain Fitzer, aged about 17 years, attempted to enter a carriage of the 8.40 train, at Caversham, this morning, while in motion, and fell between the platform and rails. The train had travelled some distance before it could be stopped, and when it was the girl was found to have escaped without any serious injuries, the extent being a cut on the forehead, and some severe bruises about the face and hand. Her escape was very remarkable, and is accounted for the presence of mind she showed in drawing herself close up between the platform and the wheels. Two hundred and six pounds were collected at the Cathedra! services yesterday. To-day the services were continued, but the attendance, except in the evening, was very small. Wellington, November 1. District Judge and Resident Magistrate Shaw has resigned his appointments in order to practise his profession as a partner in the firm of Brandon and Son.
