Dated this 31sfc day of October, 1881. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE ARAHURA RIDING. Gentlemen—l beg to offer myself as a candidate at the forthcoming election for a saat in the County Council of Wedtland. Your obedient servant, P. DUNGAN. Larrikins, October 26th, 1881. mo THE ELECTORS OF THE x ARAHURA RIDING. Gentlemen—l beg to inform yon that I am again a Ca?ididate for your suffrages at the ensuing Election for the Arahura Riding in the County Council of Westland. Throughout the long period during which I have had the honor of being one of your representatives, I have invariably striven to advance your interests, and the interests of the County generally. I have had no personal ends to serve ; and my Bole desire has been the welfare of the electors who honored me with their confidence. A very large sum of money is spent on the maintenance of main and district roads, by the County Council annually. I amaware that you are generally in favor of another system than that adopted by the Council, for the maintenance of these roads. With that syatem I entirely agree ; and I should feel it my duty to make an effort to get your views carried out, by adopting the system of public competition, under contract for all works costing over £2O, and all works under that amount to be let by local tender if practicable. I voted against a resolution to let road maintenance by contract, at a meeting of the Council on the 12th October, ilot° because I disagreed with the principle, but because I knew that that resolution Was not proposed in earnest, and was brought forward at a time when its being carried would not have the slightest effect, as it will rest with a new Council to decide the matter. I need not tell you that I have no pecuniary interest nor other interest in the question one way or another ; and I hope a Council will be elected to carry out your views and mine on this matter. I have invariably supported and voted for the reduction of miners' rights to 10s, and shall do so again the first favorable opportunity; and if a fair and just equivalant is propounded in lieu of the Gold Duty, I shall, as I have before done, vote for its total abolition. I am desirous of opening up the country by the construction of roads and tracks, and I may say that several new Works of this kind have been constructed in the district through my efforts. I have given every attention to the business of the Council, and have acted as Chairman of the Finance Committee during the last two years. I shall ask you to meet me at the various centres of population before the day of Election. Should you elect me I shall strive still to serve you as faithfully as I have endeavoured to do in the past. I have the honor to be, Gentlemen, Your most obedient servant, H. W. SANDLE. Stafford, 31st October, 1881. fiOUNTY COUNCIL ELECTION. Having received a numerously-signed requisition to offer myself as a Candidate for the ARAHURA RIDING of the COUNTY OF WESTLAND, I feel in duty bound to accede to the request, and am therefore a candidate. Yours faithfully, FERGUS BARROWxMAN. larrikin Terrace, Nov. 2, 1881.
