[to the editor.] Sir—However much may be said against this impost, it was fortunate there was £G2 10s of it in the bank on the 12th inst. (the day the road tenders were opened) for the now expiring County Chairman to clutch during the last moments of his juggling era. To preach and prate such nonsense that the gold duty prevents the “ poor miner” fiom buying school boots for his shoeless waifs while himself is one of the li t after returning from Wellington to grab .£O2 10s of this very duty, and for which he did nothing, should be conclusive proot to the poor miner” •’> I
