[new ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.! Nelson, October 17. An important mining judgment was delivered at the District Court this morning, on an appeal from Warden Giles, from Hokitika. The question was whether the Warden can cancel part of a grant. Judge Broad ruled that as the greater includes the less, and as there is clear power to cuicei the whole, tiie Warden could, upon sufficient proof oi actual abandonment ot a specified part of any mining property, declare such part forfeited. He therefore dismissed the appeal and confirmed the Warden’s decision with costs. The judgment was delivered in Nelson at the request of the parties interested, but the Judge said it could not be. recorded until his next tiip to Hokitika, as he had no power to do any judicial action at Nelson affecting Westland. Christchurch, October 17.
F. N. Robinson Won the Champion Cup, valued at £IOO, with 10 points; Baker, last year’s winner, was second with 8 points; Robinson, third, who was second last year. Dunedin, October 17.
The schooner Owuke reported from Greymonth as missing, was insured in the National Office foT £IOOO. Her crew consisted of A. Pulley, (master); John Lang, Charles Close, J. 'M‘Alpine and Jaraes Ramsay. Her cargo was wholly of coal. ARRIVAL OF THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL AT AUCKLAND. Auckland, October 15. Arrived—;City of Sydney. She left San Francisco on September 25, ami arrived at 5.30 this evening, with 13 cabin and 7 steerge pas'erigers for Auckland; 20 cabin and 23 steerage for Sydney, for which port 339 packages; New Zealand cargo, 162 tons. On October 13 she sighted the City of New York, from Auckland. Among the New Zealand cargo was 1037 bags of fruit, 100 cases onions, 150 barrels sugar, 712 cases canned goods.
