BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, October 11, The race for the Czirewich Stakes was run for to-day at Newmarket. Tlie result is as follows : J. R. Keene's Poxhall ... 1 Load Bradford's Chippendale... 2 Duke of Hamilton's Fiddler ... 3 October 13. A banquet took place at Newcastle-on-Tyne last night, under Conservative auspices. The Marquis of Salisbury, in his speech, referred to the state of affairs in South Africa, and stated that he was confident the Government would again have to " eat dirt" in the Transvaal.
