BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, October 6. The mutton brought per s.s. Orient, from .Australia, had realised an average of sixpence per pound at Smithfield market. The condition of the meat was superior to that of previous shipments. The Bank of England has to-day raised its rate of discount to 5 per cent. Obituary.—Sir John Karslake, Q.C., aged 60. It is announced here that in consequence of the increase of tlee Arab rising in Tunis, instructions have been sent by the Government to the Freuch Commander to complete. the military occupation of the country, with the object of effectually quelling the rebellion. San Francisco, October 5. The Pacific mail steamship Australia, which left Auckland ou September 13, arrived here yesterday.
