[new ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION,! Dunedin, October 4. A trial of the powder manufactured at Gatlin’s river, by Mackley, formerly of Port Chalmers, was held to-day at the Port Chalmers stone quarries, and was highly successful. The machinery at the factory is entirely Dunedin made. The Government have offered a bonus for powder.
Augustus was acquitted of the charge of manslaughter without any evidence being offered, and the jury returned a verdict of “ Not Guilty,”' as directed. Prisoner was then arraigned on the charge of assault with intent to commit bodily harm, and pleaded guilty to common assault, which plea was accepted by the Grown Prosecutor. In sentencing him, the Judge said piisoner had been guilty of great brutality to the woman, who had gone to her accent. He was a man void ot all common humanity and decency, and if the law permitted it, he (the Judge) would give him a sentence live times'as much as that he would now pass for common assault, the inaximnn penalty for which was a year’s impiisomnent with hard labor, to which he sentenced prisoner.
