[NEW ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.! Dunedin, October 3. The Colonial Secretary, who arrived here on Saturday, has stated, in answer to inquiries, that the Gaining and Lotteries Bill comes into force on November Ist, not January, as generally believed. The criminal sessions commenced this morning. Justice Johnston delivered a long opening address, but the greater part of it was occupied in commenting on the charges against Augustus, who was committed for manslaughter, and indicted for murder. Christian Vecht pleaded guilty to a charge of maliciously injuring property; but the case was ordered to stand over, to enable his Houor to consider a technical point, as to whether the indictment was correct in form. No bill was found against Augustus on an indictment for murder, but a true bill was found for manslaughter and assault. John Fergusson, for larceny of a Waikouaiti County Council voucher, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to 18 months. Mary Ann Goddard pleaded guilty to wounding John Cat-gill her paramour, and was sentenced to six months. William Thomas, who pleaded guilty to theft, and was found guilty of assault with a hammer, with intent to prevent being apprehended, was sentenced to oue year-on the former, and on the latter charge three years. George O'Brien, an old offender, for larceny of a ruler from the Harbor Board Office, was sentenced to two years. Frederick Coy, for killing sheep with intent to steal skins, not guilty. Wellington, October 3. No fresh native news has been received by the Government. Everything is quiet at Parihaka. Christchurch, October 3.
The first case of violence in connection with the strike occurred on Friday night. A man who had been to Addicgton workshops to apply for work, was waylaid in Hagley Hark by four men, one of whon beat and tore his coat, with the remark, " I suppose you have been looking for our job." The case in in the hands of the police. Hokitika, October 3. Mr Gisborne has issued a farewell address to the Totara electors. He concludes by saying that as private affairs, requiring his temporary absence from the colony, will probably preveut his return in time to attend at the meeting of the next Parliament, it is not hi« intention to offer himself as a candidate at the approaching election. R. C. Ri'id announces himself as a candidate for re-election for the Hokitika district.
