The Hospital Committee will meet at the Secretary's room this evening, at eight o'clock.
On the return yesterday of a special coach Mr Rugg put on for Christchurch last Friday, when near the Taipo, a laborer named John Robinson (known to some as " Pewter Jack") asked the driver, George Dyer, for a lift. He was allowed to get inside. When crossing the Taipo river, Dyer cautioned the man to " Hold on," as the ford was very rough. After crossing, Dyer looked round, and saw a cap floating on the water, and the man who was inside the coach had disappeared. He at once stopped the coach, called for help, and, with the assistance of a passenger (who was on the box-seat with him), Mr M'lnerney, and a groom named Oxenham, the man was got out of the water; but, although only about five minutes elapsed, life was found to be extinct, as he appeared to have been killed by the fall. The body was brought on in the coach to Kumara, to the Post-office Hotel, where an inquest was held at 12 o'clock to-day. Seven witnesses were examined, and the jury returned the following verdict:—" That the deceased John Robinson was accidentally drowned by falling out of a coach while crossing the Taipo river." A report of the inquest will appear to-morrow.
A sad misfortune befel a little boy, five years of age, son of Mr J. M'Ennis, on Wednesday last, at Arnold. He was in the act of showing another little boy how he could jump across a water-race, when, having jumped over, a stone on which he alighted slipped, and he i-ecoiled back into the race, and in the fall his right arm was dislocated or broken. Dr Gratton was sent for, who recommended his removal to Greymouth. His father took him there next morning, and Dr. Morice bandaged the arm, and, when the swelling had gone down sufficiently, he discovered it to be a compound fracture of the elbow joint. It was to be set yesterday. The little sufferer bore the pain manfully. Notice is given in another column, under the hand of Dr. Giles, Chief Commissioner of Crown Lands, that certain town allotments within the Kumara Education Reserve which have lately been released from such reservation will be sold on Thursday, 27th inst., at two o'clock in the afternoon, at the Court House, Kumara. Valuation for improvements in favor of the parties entitled thereto may be seen at the Court House, Kumara. The first competition this season for the Ladies' Challenge Medal took place on Saturday last, at the usual ranges and upon the same condition as last season. Being the first competition and the weather anything but favorable, the average shooting was low. We append
We are requested to remind members who could not attend parade last week that they should make it their duty to come this evening, as it is absolutely necessary to have an account of all property in possession of the new company. We (Nelson Mail) understand that Mr William Clarke, of Melbourne, who has for the last two years been engaged in forming a company and arranging for the working of the petroleum and paraffin spring near Gisborne, has made arrangements for the conditional purchase of the Champion Copper Lode Association's pro. perty in Aniseed Valley. Mr Clarke visited the spot on Wednesday last, and was so thoroughly satisfied with the prospects that he had no hesitation in making the necessary arrangements, which he has no doubt will be carried out in a month from now, and that very shortly afterwards work will be commenced vigorously, as the parties immediately connected with the undertaking are men of the highest standing in Melbourne. It is exceedingly satisfactory to learn that there is at least a chance of copper-miuing being commenced on a large scale in Nelson, and there is good reason to hope that this may lead to the further development of the mineral deposits with which the district is known to abound.
