Washington, September 20. The oa"th of office was to-day administered to General Arthur, the new President at the Capital. September 21. The funeral of the late President Garfield will take place at Cleveland, Ohio, his former home, on Saturday night. London, September 20. Her Majesty the Queen has sent a telegram to Mrs Garfield, expressing sympathy and condolence with her in the loss of her husband. The Right Hon. W. E. Forster, Chief Secretary for Ireland, has refused to grant a general liberation of the prisoners who are detained in custody under the provisions of the Irish Coercion Act. Aden, September 20. An outbreak of Cholera at this place is raging with increased severity, and numerous deaths have occurred. Every precaution is being taken to lesson the spread of the epidemic. Paris, September 21. In response to the Bey's recent protest, the French Government has sent a re-assuring communication that it has no intention to occupy Tunis. Berlin, September 21. The marriage of the Crown Prince of Sweden and Norway with the Princess of Baden was celebrated today.

Adelaide, September 22. In both houses of the South Australian Parliament last night motions were passed expressing condolence with Mrs Garfield. Melbourne, September 22. In the Legislative Assembly last night a vote of condolence with Mrs Garfield was passed. The case of supposed small-pox at Yackandandah turns out to be only chicken-pox. Another auspicious ca-fi is, however, reported to-day from Benalla, in the north-ease of Victoria. Sailed—yesterday morning, the Union Company's steamship, Rotorua, for the Bluff.
The Duchess Filly is now first favorite for the Melbourne Cup at 10 to 1.
