Tiiw intelligence which reaches us this morning of the death of James Garfield, President of the United States of America, will not take Our readefs by surprise! Since the 2nd day of July last, when he was fired at with two heavy pistol shots ih rapid succession by the disappointed Chicago office-seeker, Guiteau, his life has hung upon the most brittle of threads > and although medical skill has Undoubtedly been the means of easing pain and prolonging his existence* it was not difficult to see that his end was near—that the frequent relapses must shortly prove fatal. It will be gratifying to millions of people in all parts of the world that the President of the great Republic “died calmly.” We are reminded of the words of Lord Bacon—“ He that dies in an earnest pursuit scarce feels the hurt: and therefore, a mind fixed and bent upon somewhat that is good, doth avert the dolours of death.” And so it seems to have been with General Garfield. Nations, however, will mourn his loss.
