‘LATEST FOREIGN NEWS. Washington, September 19
This morning’s bulletin from Long Branch reports that President Garfield has suffered from repeated rigors, and his physicians state that his case is now hopeless. It is feared that his death may take place at any moment. Calcutta, September 19.
Telegrams received herte report that hostilities have commenced between the Ameer’s and Ayoub Khan’s forces. Firing was heard for several hours on Saturday last, in the direction of Candahar.
Suez, September 19. The Orient Company’s steamship Orient, which left Melbourne on August 22nd, arrived here to-day. Her cargo of frozen meat is reported to be in excellent condition.
LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS,
Sydney, September 20. Skuthorpe has written to Sir Henry Parkes, Premier, demanding £6OOO for the relics of Leichhardt’s expedition. _ Small-pox continues to prevail in the city, and some fresh cases have been reported to the Boaid of Health. At the same time, it is currently reported that several cases exist in a private residence, but that secrecy is being observed regarding them.
■; The final heat in the Whisky Trophy contest came off on the Bth, and was witnessed hy a large crowd. A fresh Hvind blowing from the north was against the rowers. A good start was effected, Laycock and Edwards being outsiders, Pearce and Power inside. Edwards secured a slight advantage at starting, but Pearce quickly gained three-quarters of a length, with Laycock close behind. Within a mile from the start the latter began to forge ahead, soon gaining a clear length in advance, Pearce and others being far behind. Nearing Putney, Laycock was three lengths ahead which he increased to eight. Passing Breakfast point, Pearce rowing well, madb several spurts, to which Laycock always responded. Ultimately Laycock eased off, and allowed Pearce to come within a length and a quarter passing the post. Power was lengths behind. Edwards pulled up a mile from home; Time, 23min. 6sec. The first prize is £2OO, the second £7O, and the third £3O.
Melbourne, September 20. It is understood that £3500 will be required to pay the liabilities arising out ot the late railway accident at Jolimont.
The Bank of Victoria offers £SOO reward for the discovery of the robber of the missing notes. The Victorian Parliament reassembled to-day. A case of what is believed to be smallpox is reported from Yackandandah, in the north-east of the Colony. The symptoms so far are mild, but the patient has been isolated. An inquity into the Jolimont railway accident has resulted in the finding that the same was due to the dangerous condition of the tire of the wheel. The Court further found that the management of (lohsmi’s Bay railway was very lax, but could not fix upon any individual the responsibility. Arrived—the P. and O. Company’s steamship Hydaspes, with the English mails via Suez, dated Loudon, August 12th.
