ELECTION OF A BOROUGH COUNCILLOR.
The election of one person to fill an extraordinary vacancy in the Borough Council of Kumara took place yesterday, the poll commencing at nine o’clock in the morning and closing at six in the evening. There were five candidates, whose names appear hereunder. Shortly after six o’clock, the Returning Officer (J. Wylde,' Esq.) made his appearance at the door of the Town Hall, and announced the following to be the result :
Samuel Solomon bollock 56 John Mnlvibill... 45 John Sam bell Pearn 18 Duncan McLennan 6 George Stewait ... 6 There were three informal votes. He had much pleasure in declaring Mr Pollock to lie duly elected.—[Loud cheers, and calls for “ Mr Pollock 1”] Mr S. S. Pollock then came forward and said : Gentlemen and Ratepayers 1 beg to return you my most sincere thanks for the manner in which you have voted for me on this occasion. Those who voted for me in a former election have shown their confidence in me again to-day, and I give them my best thanks. —[Hear, hear.] I might say that I have got in in spite of all that has been brought against me today—[Hear, hear.] I beg to return a vote of thanks to the Chairman. — r [Cheers.] Calls for “ Mr Mulvihill!” Mr Mulvihill stepped forward, and said : Mr Chairman and Ratepayers of the Borough; I am proud of the po-i-
tion you have placed me in this day* It 1 had been returned I should have done my beat for you:—[Cheers.] Calls for “Mr Pearn !" “ M‘Leunan !” “ Geordie Stewart!”
Mr George Stewaft came , forward and. said: Ratepayers of the borough of Knmara : I have to thank (hose who voted for me to-day, those who did not vote for me, and those who promised .to vote for me find did n'dt do so. If I had been returned today f should have seen to it that we should not be treated so badly from Bremond’s up Seddon street. It is disgraceful. However, this is the first time that I have comes forward and it will not be the last.—[Cheers,] 1 have been asked to stand j it is my ambitidh to. become a a councillor, and a councillor I will be. [Cheers.] Inhere will, be another election soon j and I shall stand again.—— [Cheers.] Mr Seddon is a member J but tthdre is he i Yob might as. well have no niethbCr at all asi him • he ia away half his tittle. ~ What has be done to repair the street up there, or the culvert which is rottting away and dangerous to life and limbi If you had put me in, I should have seen to this.—[Hear, hear.] I thank you alb—[Cheers.] - The crowd then dispersed.
