London, September 12. Telegrams.have been received from Berne, announcing that a great land slip has occurred at Elm in the Canton of Glarus, Switzerland. Nearly a whole town is buried, arid over two hundred persons have been killed. -
News is to hand from Persia that several severe shocks of .'earthquake have been experienced.at Khoi, a town iu the north of that country, causing great destruction to property, and some loss of life.
British public opinion, as expressed in leading articles in to-day's issues of the Press throughout the country, on the subject of the state of affkirs in Egypt, is opposed to the occupation of that country by European powers. It has transpired that communications have pM.ssed between the French and English Government in regird to the Egyptian crisis, and that the French Government have intimated their intention to co-operate with England in any action that may be taken in view of the present aspect of affairs. The Park Theatre, situated in Park street, Carcpdendown, was totally destroyed by- fire last night. New York, September 12. The drought which has existed for some time past throughout the United States has now broken up, heavy rain having fallen during the past 24 hours. Washington, September 12. Telegrams received to-day from Long Branch report that President Garfield has suffered a relape. His physicians further report that one of his lungs is affected, and his condition is again deemed most critical.
Ottawa, September 12. At the International Sculling Regatta in Toronto Bay, the race for single sculls was won by Ross. The consultation race was won by Edward Trickett, of Sydney, beating Gandaur and Hosmer.
LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
Sydney, September 13. Four fresh cases of small-pdx have been reported to the Health Board. The sufferers are Edward Langley, of Ultimo-, suburb of Sydney; Annie Westwood, of Sussex street; a child named Maria Evans, of Kent street; and a sister of Miss Waile's, who died of the disease at Woollahara, last week.
