London, September 7. Information has been received from Dublin, reporting that an attempt was made to-day to blow up the powder magazine at the police barracks, Castlebar, County Mayo, but that it proved unsuccessful. v The first meeting of the Methodist Ecumenical Council was held to-day* Over 400 delegates from all parts of the world were present at the opening ceremony. A fire broke out to-day on board the ship Gralloch, loading for Sydney, and before it could be extinguished, a large portion of her cargo was destroyed or damaged. Ottawa, September 7. It is announced that Hanlan has withdrawn from the sculling match with Ross, which was arranged to take place at Toronto, in October next. His reason for breaking off the match has not transpired.
LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
Melbourne, September 9. The Melbourne Presbytery, after a sitting lasting two days, has passed, by 18 to 8, a vote of censure on Mr J. C. Stewart, Elder of the Scots’ Church, for imparting dishonesty to certain believers in the Westminster confession. The discussion on the question was most animated, and frequently took an angry tone on the part of the members of the Presbytery.
