In the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, before H, A. Stratford, Esq., R.M., judgment was given in the case of Denfield v. M‘Hendry, which had been adjourned from a previous Court day. There was no appearance on the part of the defendant, and the award was made for the plaintiff for the amount claimed, £4 3s 9d. There was no other business.
The Hospital Committee will hold their regular meeting at the Secretary’s rooms this evening, at eight o’clock. The usual weekly parade of our local Volunteers will take place this evening, at the regular hour and place, under the new head of the Kumara Rifle Volunteers. A good muster is expected, as Captain John O’Hagan will be introduced, who will address the meil on Volunteer affairs. After the parade, the usual monthly meeting of committee will take place, when some important business is to be brought forward. All who can make it convenient to attend are requested to do so. Captain Edwin telegraphed about noon yesterday, to expect bad WOather from any direction “ between north-west and south-west, the ghiss rising within 12 hours ; and the sea considerable from southward after that time. ”
Money Order and Savings Bank have been opened at Maketn and Kamo. Auckland is the chief office for both places. A meeting of the Goldfields’ Awards Committee of the Grey County Council was held at the offices of the Council, Greymonth, yesterday afternoon. The object of the meeting was to receive from the different applicants the evidence they had to submit, and which would enable the Council to determine under what class of awards the applications would come. Cr. Reid- thought that the first thing that ought to be done was to decide whether the field alleged to have been discovered was a new goldfield at all. He did n °t think so. The Clerk read applications from the following persons for the reward offered by the Council:—T. Burns, May 3rd, 1880; H. R. Weasels, 19th May, 1880 ; David Morgan, August 24th, 1880.
