TO CORRESPONDENTS.
“W. M.”—The Fenton (or more probably the Teuton) is one of the Cape Town Union Steamship Company’s boats, plying, we suppose, between Cape Town and Natal, calling at the intermediate ports (Port Elizabeth, Algoa Bay, &c.). Port Elizabeth is distant from Cape Town over 500 miles by sea, and that again is about half way to Port Natal. Port Elizabeth and Port Natal are the principal ports of disembarkation for Kimberley and the diamond fields. “ Transit. ” — There will be a transit of the planet Mercury across the sun’s disc on the Bth November next, at about 10.46 a.m. (New Zealand mean time), terminating at about 4 p.m. The transit of Venus does not take place till December next year ; but it will not happen at an hour of the day so favorable for observation in New Zealand as that which took place in 1874. After that a transit of Venus will not occur again till June, 2004.
