TO CORRESPONDENTS.
Comkt.—" The great southern comet," as it has been called in the English papers, from the fact of its being first observed in southern latitudes during the end of May and beginning of June last, rose to view for northern hemisphere observers on the night of the 23rd of June. Mr Hind, the English Astronomer Royal, computed that the luminosity of the comet was five times as great as it was when it first appeared in the South American, South African, and Australian skiesj but this intensity of light gradually declined, until on June 27 the comet was hardly visible. The comet was not identified with any of the known comets, whose orbits have been calculated and whose return may be foretold.
