Dunedin, August 23. The case of Campbell, found dead this morning, has peculiar surroundings. He had a watch and £lO on him when he left home on Monday morning. Only Is 6d was found on him by thb police. It is thought he had got into bad company and was eased of all he had, and then turned oat. He was an old settler of 32 years’ standing, having sons and daughters married at the Taieri and Southland. Wanganui, August 22. It is reported that gold in payable quantities has been discovered by two Europeans from Taranaki, on the opatan Block, near Tunna. The Native owners of the land have decided not to sell it, though it has been surveyed by Government, Nelson, August 22. A fire occurred at Totaranui, on Friday evening, when the residence of Mr Gibbs, M.H. K, was totally destroyed, together with its contents. The house was a new and handsome building, containing about seven or eight rooms, but was only insured for £l5O. The contents also were insured for £l5O, both in the Standard. The tire was occa-
sionecl through the bursting of a keroaei.e lamp. The flitnes spread sd rapidly that nothing was saved.
