RE-ERECTION OF ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, NELSON.
Father mahoney's visit to * " the west coast The members of St. Mary's congregationVrHelson, with a number of citizens "Who had received invitations to be present, met in a large room of the Convent School, on the evening of the 26th July, for the purpose of welcoming the Rev. Father Mahoney on his return to Nelson on a tour from the "West Coast, with the object of collecting moneys for the re-erection of St 4 Mary's Church. Tables were spread with refreshments, and at 7 o'clock about 200 sat down to partake thereof. At a later/period in the evening the chair was taken by Judge Broad, who was supported on the right by the gaest of thqr.evening, the Rev. Father Mahoney, arid his Worship the Mayor, Mrs Dodaon, &nd the prominent members of the congregation. The proceedings were then opened by an overture, performed on four pianos by eight young ladies, which elicited very hearty applause. The Chairman, Judge Broad, read a letter of apology and congratulationfrom the Rev. Father Garin, whose health Aid not permit of his being present. He also presented Father Mahoney with an edition of " Tertulliun," in remembrance of his good work; and subse* quently proposed the following resolution, which was received with great applause:—" That the congregation of St. Mary's, Nelson, desire to publicly express their great thankfulness to the clergy, Uatholic laity, and Protestant friends who have so generously assisted in repairing the damages caused by the late fire, and especially to their West Coast friends for their most liberal as* histance." The resolution was carried amidst acclamation. During the evening a number of instrumental and vocal selections were given in a manner which called forth very hearty expressions of applause; and one selection, " Der Rheinfeirs," by the Misses Kennedy, Moalton, Harding, and Duff, on four pianos, called for Special mention. The proceedings closed with a vote of thanks to the Chairman and the singing of the National Anthem.
