KUMARA LITERARY SOCIETY.

The annual general meeting of members of the Kumara Literary Institute was held in the society’s room, Main street, oil Tuesday evening last, the Rev. E. A; Scott {Yice-President) in the chair. The Secretary (Mr J. R. Cooper) read the annual report and balance-sheet. The latter appe.irs in our advertising columns; the following is the Annual Report. The Commitee of the Kumara Literary Institute, in presenting their Fourth Annual Report, are pleased to state the Institute has made great progress during the past year, and is at the present time in a better position than it lias ever been before. The library has been twice supplied with an assortment of new books during the past year, and we are at present receiving newspapers, periodicals, &c., to an extent not equalled by any other institute on the Coast.

The total amount of subscriptions received during the year aggregates to £79 12s lid, which together with a grant of £lO from the County Council and a subsidy of £3O from the Borough Council, make a total of £ll9 12s lid. The total expenditure for the year amounts to £lO9 Us 7d shewing a credit balance at Bank, to the amount of £lO Is 4d.

We may mention that the subscriptions are coming in very regularly, and that we have received a great many new sub-* scribers this past month or so. It may be seen by the above statement that the Institute has been living within its income, and making steady progress in the right direction. In comparing this report with last year’s we find the total receipts amounted to £B7 2s 9d, and the expenditure to £B7 6s 9dj while this year the receipts amount to £ll9 12s lid, and the expenditure to £lO9 11s 7d.

Our liabilities at present are £2B Bs. On the motion of Mr Smart, seconded by Mr O’Hagan, the report and balancesheet were adopted. The election of officers was then proceeded with, resulting as hereafter : H. A. Stratfoid, Esq., President; Rev. K A. Scott, and E. Blake, Esq., VicePresidents; Mr J. R. Cooper, Treasurer and Secretary. Committee: Rev. R. Fennell, Messrs Srnait, Petrie, O’Hagau, Duckworth, Dennett, Payne, Harre.

On the motion of the Rev. Jfi. A. Scott, seconded by Mr ,T. O’Hagau, it was decided that the tin mci.l year end on the 30th June in each year. It was ordered that a book for suggestions for subscribers be placed on the table in the reading room. A vote of thanks was unanimously

accorded to the Hon. Secretary (Mr J. R Cooper) for his services during the yast year. This concluded the business of thb meeting.
