+ BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, July 28. In the House of Commons to-day the Irish Land Bill was reported to the House with the amendments made in Committee, and the third reading was fixed for next sitting. Paris, July 29. News has been received from Tunis that since the capture of the town of Gabes, the French forces have occupied the island of Zherba, in the Gulf of Gabes, Calcutta, July 28. Telegrams are to hand from Afghanistan, announcing that Ayoub Khan’s army is crossing the river Helmund, some distance below Girishk, and has commenced its march on Candahar. Telegrams have been received from Candahar announcing that a battle was fought yesterday between the forces of Ayoub Khan and those of the Ameer, resulting in the defeat of the latter. One of the Ameer’s regiments deserted and joined Ayoub Khan, and the rest of Abdurrahman’s forces fled after losing all their guns and baggage. July 28. Further telegrams from Afghanistan report that the battle between Ayoub’s and the Ameer’s forces was fought at Karezitta ('I Karez Illaiyar) a short distance south of Candahar, Since their defeat, all the Ameer’s caualry have joined Ayoub Khan, whose forces have been materially strengthened. The Ameer’s garrison in the city of Candahar is i eported to be very weak, and unable to offer any strong resistance to Ayoub. + LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, July 29, The steamer Ferret will be sold by auction on the 12th proximo. The paddle steamship Murray, belonging to the Gippsland St?ara Navigation Company, has gone ashore at Gippsland lakes, and is expected to become a total loss. Sydney, July 30. In the libel action brought by Dr. Birmingham, the Roman Catholic priest of Wagga, against the Sydney Evening News, defendants have consented to a verdict for £SOO. Brisbane, July 30. Three important libel actions are pending. One has been brought by Hemnant against the Observer for £SOOO damages, and the other two informations are laid by Mr Coote, a journalist, and Mr Perkins, Secretary for Lands, against the Evangelical Standard; damages are being laid at £IOOO and £2OOO respectively, A telegram is to hand from Rockhampton stating that a nurse-girl walking with three children carelessly dropped one into the river, and then it is further alleged drowned the other two in order to prevent their telling. An inquiry is being instituted by the police into the reported crime.
