The Warden's Court will be opened at 8 o'clock this evening. We observed at 1 o'clock to-day, with the aid of a telescope and dark object glass, no less than nine black spots on the disc of the sun. Two of these were on a low degree of south latitude, and near the eastern limb. Sun spots, or "macuke" as they are sometimes termed, are not at all uncommon, having been frequently observed ever since the invention of the telescope ; though we have never before noticed so many at any one time. At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, J. O'Hagan, Esq. J.P., disposed of a single case of drunkenness. The accused had been in the logs a sufficient time to allow all traces of inebriety to disappear, and was discharged with a caution.

One of the useless curs that infest Seddon street, caused an ugly accident on Saturday morning last. Mr Rodgers was riding a chesnut mare, going at an easy canter, when a dog rushed out, and ran between the mare's feet, throwing it down, and but for the agility of the rider, he himself might have been severely injured. As it is, the horse has sustained some severe cuts, which will take a considerable time to heal.

Mrs Elizabeth Barber, aged 38 years died in the Hokitika Hospital early yesterday morning. Although she had only been thirty-six hours in the institution, she had long suffered from a painful internal disease, and had just been discharged from the Kumara Hospital as incurable. She was well known in Kumara, having kept a store in Main street.

James Kelly, late of the South Spit, having challenged John Wright, of Hokitika, to row him for any sum, from £lO to £SO, Wright (the West Coast Times informs us) has accepted the challenge, and has deposited £5 with Mr Stephen Glossop, of the Hit or Miss Hotel, to row him within six weeks, for £lO, any distances from two to four miles.

To-morrow Messrs Wade and Spenco will offer for sale at the back of Blake's

Empire Hotel, in Seddon street, a number of young horaes, suitable for various putposes ; and will also, afterwards offer, at the Shamrock Hotel, household furniture) drapery, fancy goods, and several freehold sections in Kumara. The monthly inspection of the local Rifle Contingent will take place at the •Adelphl Hall to-morrow evening*
