BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, July 20. In the House of Commons to-day, the postponed clauses of the Irish Land Bill were passed through Committee, sifter some debate. The Bill was reported to the House with amendments, and the third reading fixed for next sitting. In the course of to-day's sitting, the appointments to the Irish Land Commission were approved by the House of Commons without opposition. At the annual meeting of the National Rifle Association at Wimbledon, the Queen's Prize (second stage), consisting of the Association's gold medal and £250, has been won by Private Deck, of the 3rd Devon Volunteer Corps, who made a score of 86 marks, the highest on record.
Melbourne, July 22. The trial of Henderson, Wright, and Wnllace, of the steamship Ferret, concluded to-day. The jury returned a verdict ofguily of conspiracy to defraud the Customs and intending purchasers, and guilty with extenuating circumstances on other counts of the indictment. There was a want of evidence regarding the ownership of the vessel. Sentence is deferred until Saturday next. Brisbane, July 22. The doctors have decided to-day that the malady from which three children in South Brisbane are suffering is smallpox, and the authorities hare, therefore, considered it advisable to place them in quarantine. Every possible precaution is being taken to prevent the spread of the disease.
