Mr R. J. Seddoft, M.H.R., and Mr Dungan, arrived at Wellington yesterday afternoon. The increased water-supply petition from this district will come before the Goldfields Committee to-morrow evening, It is probable the committed will send for the manager of the race. Cases of unusual importance will occupy the attention of the Resident Magistrate’s Court tins evening. The following contracts were let by the County Council at its last meeting ; Widening section 3 Dillman’s to Ohx-ist-church road track, O’Leary and White, Hokitika ; protective works at Stafford, J. B, Glover, Stafford. By a fresh advertisement that appears to-day it will be seen that Mr A. A. Cameron’s monster English Derby consultation will be drawn' in a few days. Mr J. M ‘Donald, Globe >Hotel, Dillman’s Town, is the only agent hereabout for tickets in this event; and all persons desiring to participate therein should make immediate application. It is probable that after this month no more consultations in this colony'will be allowed. The West Coast Times reports that “ the Wallace, ‘ Which .arrived yesterday from her southern-trip, brought up eight head of cattle from Jackson’s Bay. Experts tell us that they are splendid beasts, in good condition, weighing 9001bs. each. It is high time the local market Supplied with beef from, the--south to a greater extent than it isysit present.” We understand that for sonie time past it has been contemplated by stockowners to have more centrally-situated yards for the disposal of stock, and Messrs Keech and Malloy’s, Teremakau, and Houlahan’s Junction, have been mentioned as the most desirable sites for such a purpose. The election for the Grey Hospital Committee for the ensuing year took place at Gilmer’s Hotel, Greymouth, on Saturday last. The following gentlemen were elected F. W. Lahman, J. Petrie, P. B. Cameron, F. C. Dupre, Dr. Smith, R. J. Tonks, J. Arnott, J. J. Blackmore, A. W. Yarrall, J. E. Warner, J. G. Thomas, C. C. M‘Carthy, A. Hildebrand. Diphtheria is said to have been cured in Germany by the use, as a gargle, of a decoction of blue gum leaves and the inhalation of the steam therefrom. A man named Thomas Thomas was charged at the Dunedin City Police Court with having wounded Constable Black in the breast with a pocketknife, in Princes street, on Tuesday night last. Dr. Borrows, in his evidence, stated that the wound was over the heart, and was one inch long and an inch and a quarter deep. If the knife had penetrated a little deeper, it would have in all probability proved fatal. The prisoner was committed to take his trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court.
The death is announced of the Rev. John Gumming, D.D. Minister of the Scotch Church, Crown Court, Covenant Garden, author of several devotional and controversial works. He was 69 years of age.
