The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. TUESDAY, JULY 5, 1881.

The Hospital Committee will hold their usual monthly meeting, this evening, at the Secretary's rooms, Main street, at 8 o'clock.

We are requested to draw attention to the fact that the funeral of Mr R. J. Seddon's child " Katey " will move from his residence, Seddon street, at one o'clock to-morrow afternoon. The hour was fixed at two originally to enable Mr Seddon himself to be present, but the sorrowing father lost no time night nor day in

travelling hither from Wellington to be present at the last sad ceremony, and he reached Kumara at two o'clock this morning, having left Christchurch at halfpast nine on Sunday night. The Union Company's s.s. Hero, being quarantined at Auckland for six days, her date of departure from West Coast ports has been deferred to the 14th instant, and she will then be despatched to Melbourne direct, not calling at Newcastle as previously announced. A match at quoits was played on Wednesday last at the Spread Eagle, Ashburton Forks, between the Ashburton and Mount Somers Clubs. After a long and closelycontested struggle, the Mount Somers team won by four games against their opponents' three. The visiting team were hospitably entertained at an excellent luncheon. The return match will be played at Ashburton. Members of artillery batteries will be interested in knowing the debated question of color in the cord on the regimental facings has been, after much debating, definitely settled. That of scarlet—the same as the British Volunteer Artillery—has been chosen over white and yellow both of which had their advocates. An old man named York has committed suicide by hanging himself at Ravensbourne, near Dunedin.

Mr Miller, of Victoria, was a through passenger by the San Francisco mail steamer, with a famous Kentucky trotting stallion.
