THE BARTON TESTIMONIAL.
[to TB& HifITOJEU] Stß—l am extremely glad to find that active steps are .being taken td. present Mr Barton with 1 some token of the esteem in which he is held throughout this district. It is itio3t unusual to find a Government official wlio conibines in himself a high order of intglligence and ability, with urbanity arid gentlemanly behaviour. tfhe miners unfortunately know this to their cost} but when they do meet with such a man, they know how to appreciate hitri: I am not yet personally acquainted with the gentleman who is to be MiBarton's successor, but I most devoutly hope that upon him will fall his predecessor's mantle. This district is suffer-: ing a severe loss in the removal of Mr Barton; and, although it may be officially looked upon as promotion, still, td the miners it may mean something entirely different. The Testimonial Com-* mittee, judging from the list of names published in your paper, may be said to fairly represent the people in the various parts of this large district, and it now remains for the miners to do* their part towards attaining the' object; in am, sir, yodra, <fcc.,> Bone and Slnew.
