We have just received the following telegram from Wellington, to which we draw the special attention of the Watersupply Committee :—“Your irrepressible (member, R. J. Seddon, Esq., Kumara) has arrived, and has had an interview with the Minister of Public Works re an increased water-supply for Kumara and Waimea. The feeling is favorable. Want of money is the only obstacle. The committee should hurry up the petition prior to the Financial Statement. The Regulation of Elections Bill comes on this afternoon.”

The Postmaster has kindly informed us that the San Francisco mail may be expected to arrive here to-morrow afternoon, having been despatched from Christchurch hither early this morning. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, before E. Barff, Esq., J.P., and J. O’Hagan, Esq., J.P., Anne Oust, charged with larceny, was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment, with hard labor.— E. Murphy was charged with drunkenness, resisting the police, and with using obscene language. For the first offence, he was fined 10s, or in default 24 hours’ imprisonment ; for the second, one month’s imprisonment, with hard labor ; and for the third, he was fined £l, or in default, 4S hours’ imprisonment.

A preliminary meeting of gentlemen favorable to some public recognition being given to Mr Barton of the estimation in which he is held in this district took place at Mr Skilton’s store Ir.st evening ; Mr Barff occupied the chair. It was resolved : —(1.) “That in consideration of the very able and courteous manner in which Mr Barton has discharged his duties in the Resident Magistrate’s and Warden’s Court, this meeting deems it due to him not to allow him to leave the district without a suitable recognition of the estimation in which he is held.”—(2.) “ That a committee to cafry out the above object, and consisting of his Worship the Mayor, Messrs Barff, Hannan, Paulsen, Goodwin, Bass, Skilton, Barrowman, Janion, W. Morris, D. Shaw, Bramhall, Dungan, Reynolds, J. Corrigan, M. Maloney, Peam, Blake, Wylde, E. King, Harris, 0. W, Anderson, Whinnery, and Kettle, be appointed, with power to add to their number.” (3.) “That Mr Hannan, be requested to act as secretary, and that he communicate with the members of the Committee, inviting them to meet at 8 p.m. on Saturday at Mr Skilton’s store.” Messrs Wade and Spence sell to-morrow, at Mr W. Nicholson’s room, several town sections and a lot of boots and shoes. One hundred pounds has been forwarded from Dunedin to the Treasurer of the Irish National Land League, The Olutha River Board of Conservators are going to purchase a steamer in London to dredge the river. The Committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club have offered the Forbury Park Company £25,000 for the racecourse, but no definite agreement is come to, as the company are asking £30,000. The Jockey Club have agreed to let the offer stand for six months, pending the company’s accepting it. At the inquest on the body of Mary Galvan, found drowned in Auckland harbor, an open verdict was., returned. Her husband was killed at Epsom some years ago. According to information supplied to the Dunedin Morning Herald, the sum of £60,000 has been refused for a quarteracre section in Princes street, Dunedin, The Wanganui Benevolent Society spent in relief during the year £4lB. Government have awarded £2O to the Wanganui Fire Brigade, in recognition of their efforts at the late fire at the Post Office. Mr. Jacob Joseph, of Wellington, has, with his characteristic liberality, undertaken, at his sole cost, the thorough renovation of the Synagogue there. A Nihilist plot of an extensive character has been discovered at St. Petersburg. It involved a general rising, and the destruction of the bridges around the city.
