SCHOOL REQUISITES.
[to the editor.] Sir—ln your Tuesday's issue you mention that a circular had been read to the children- of the Kumara State School calling on them to subscribe a stated allowance for school requisites, and intimating that proceedings would be instituted against those not complying with this illegal demand. Now, sir, the Education Act distinctly prevents any fees being charged ; a special resolution of the Central Board was passed three months ago prohibiting committees from charging, and in order that no injustice might be done, a further motion was agreed to that the Board would supply requisites free of charge to committees, and refund moneys held back during-last quarter. In the face of the Education Act, and in opposition to these resolutions, the Kumara Committee, or the head-master, still persist in making illegal demands, which parents, having the interests of free education at heart will do well to resist. The committee cannot obtain payment by legal process, so that the idea of court proceedings is mere fudge. If it is the committee that is " forcing" this matter, then the ratepayers should see well to it at next election ; if, however, it is the head teacher, he should be warned in time of the unpleasant consequences (to himself) likely to follow.—Yours, etc., Joseph Petrie. Greyuiouth, June 22, 1881.
