CABIN PHILOSOPHY.
Some verses on " Cabin (says "Rapier") stowed away at the" end of Scribner's Magazine, ate worth abundant quotation. I have not o( late seen simple philosophy better put than in the following : Datf's heap o' dreadful music in de very ~ fines' fiddle j A ripe an' meller apple may be rotten in de middle. De wises' lookin' trabeller may be the bigges' fool ; Dar's a lot o' solid kickin' in the humbles' kind o' mule. De preacher ain't de holiest dat w'ars de meekes' look. An does de loudes' bangin' on de kivel* ob de Book ! [I hope this will not be thought to be irreverent, for it is evidently not meant to be so.] Well, you tink dat doin' nuffin' 'tall is mighty sof' an' nice, But it busted up the renters in de lubly Paradise. You see, dey bofe was human bein's, jes' like me an' you, An' dey coudn't reggerlate deirselves wid not a ting to do ; Wid plenty wuk befo' 'em, an' a cotton crop to make, Dey'd nebber thought o' loafin' 'roun' an' chatten wid de snake.
