THE STATE SCHOOL.
[to the editor.]
Sir —According to the statement of assets and liabilities sent to the Central Board of Education by the Secretary of the Local School Committee, the committee seem utterly to ignore having collected any mortey from the children for school cleaning and requisites ; and) according to Mr Seddon’s statement that only twelve Children were outraged, one in each family of those who al'e furthest behind, the public are led to believe that all the rest have paid up to the Ist of June. Sir,-1 am one of the twelve, and my liabilities amount to about 2s or 2s fid at the out* side. Now, taking that as a fair average of the twelve evicted, it would amount to £1 10s. Taking the average attendance, as stated by the Secret tary, at 259, the account will stand thus up to the 31st of May : £ a. d. Poll tax account for 1881, 259 children, at fid each per month for 5 months ... 32 7 .6 Credit 12 outraged families at 2s fid per family 1 10 0 Balance £3O 17 6 What have the Committee done with the above amount I —that’s what’s the matter ! Have they added it to the balance of the State School prize money 1 or has it gone in kerosene, like the funds of the late Arahura Road Board 1 or is it to be spent in a good attendance certificate, embellished on vellum, to be presented to one of the committee’s children I —l am, sir, yours truly, Ignoramus. June 13, 1881.
