At the Supreme Court to-day, the Grand Jury found true bills against Ben, Bradford and John Quinn, for forgery and uttering; Martin Thyme, for perjury; James Mack, for horse stealing ; George Robson, William Gardiner, and Edward Ford, for larceny ; John Scott, John Johnston, James Cumskey, Pat Egan, and Hugh Boyd, for arson; James M‘Mantis, stealing from a dwelling. No bills were returned in the case of Michael Quirk, who attempted suicide; Joseph James Farrell, for embezzlement) John Quinn was sentenced to three years J George Robson for nine months ; Ben. Bradford, three months; Edward Ford, six months; James Mack, five years ; William Gardiner, six months. Martin Thyme was fined £SO and bound over for two 3 T ears to be of good behaviour, himself in £IOO, and two sureties of £SO each. Cambridge, June 11. At the inquest on the body of Edward M'Garry, a verdict of found drowned was returned. Dunedin, June 11. A very heavy and distinct shook of earthquake with a rumbling noise, which continued about fiveor six seconds, was felt at Kuri Bush, Taieri district, on Thursday, at 9.40 p.m. Wellington, June 11, The Hon. Mr Gisborne has given notice that during the present sitting of the conference of delegates representing local governing bodies in New Zealand, he will move the following motions : (1.) That Crown lands should be rated, and the proceeds equitably distributed among the local governing bodies ; (2.) That County Councils be subsidised by the Colony, at per mile of main roads maintained by such Councils; (3.) That County Council chairmen be ex officio members of the Waste Lands Board, having jurisdiction over the country ; (4.) That the 20 per cent, of the land revenue taken away by the Financial Arrangements Act, 1880, be restored to the County Councils. At to-day’s meeting of the Conference the following motion by M‘Arthur was carried—That it is absolutely necessary some assistance in the shape of a subsidy should be given to local bodies to enable them to complete the construction of roads within the district heretofore sold by Government, and wholly or partially settled, Government having failed to provide for these necessary works out of the proceeds of the sale of such districts in time past.
