CENTRAL BOARD OF EDUCATION.
♦_; : At the meeting of the Central Education Board held yesterday afternoon at the Masonic Hall, Greymouth, present—Messrs Hamilton (chair), Perkins, Lord, Parfitt, Grimmond, and Petrie, the following business of interest to this town and district was transacted : For the election of a member of the Central Education Board, the.following votes of the different local committees were read :—For Mr W. Duncan (10): Okarito, Bruce Bay, Wide Bay, Kakatai, Stafford, Blue Spur, Totara, Kanieri, and Christchurcu road. For Mr Nancarrow (8) : Greymouth, Kynnersley, Ahaura, Orwell Creek, Arnold, Marsden, Nelson Creek, and Brunnerton. For Mr Seddon (1): Kumara. Mr Duncan was then declared duly elected a member of the Board to fill the extraordinary vacancy that had occurred.
Mr Thomas Mogdridge appeared in person to complain against the Kumara School Committee for having earned away from the school one cf his ohiSiren, aged 14 years. The reasou !' u- s-o doing was that he had not jali) sixpence for one of his children. He had ceased for some little time to pay certain fees that had been demanded by the committee, because the charges
Werte illegal, tie might Say that one reason he had for not paying the sixpence was that he considered that his children had been unfairly treated in respect to the distribution of prizes. He considered there had been gross favoritism in the distribution of 1 prizes, lie desired to know whether the charges imposed by the Kumara Committee were legal or not. The Chairman said the Central Board could not interfere with the Local Cominittee in this particular matter. Ho pointed out that it had already been decided that local committees could hot compel the parents of children to pay these fees, though the supply of the requisites might be stopped where payment was refused. Mr Petrie, with the view of meeting the case, moved the following resolution i—" That the Secretary of the Board be directed to call the attention of the Kumara Committee to the resolution passed at the last meeting in relation to the charges for school requisites being discontinued."—Carried. It was resolved, on the motion cf Mr Grimmond, that the Kumara Committee be communicated with in respect to any children expelled from the local school; and that the head master be called upon for an explanation. Consideration of an explanation for a further grant from the Kumara School Committee was deferred to a future meeting. On the motion of Mr Pet lie, seconded by Mr Perkins, it was resolved—" That this Board, having duly considered the question of the removal of the Board's offices to Grey mouth, sees no reason to alter the decision previously arrived at." A motion " That the Board purchase a dwelling-house, office, store, and stable in Mackay street, Greymouth, for the sum of ,£650," was agreed to.
