The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8, 1881.

We \mintentionally omitted from the list of licensed houses yesterday Mr Jeremiah O'Sullivan's Masonic Hotel.

Mr Weston addressed a large meeting of the electors at Foley's Hotel, Westbrook, last evening. A motion "That Mr Weston is a fit and proper person to represent the Grey Valley in the House of Representatives 1 ' was put and unanimously carried. Mr Weston also addressed about 60 miners at Cameron's yesterday afternoon, when a similar motion was also unanimously carried. The report will appear to-morrow. The mail coach left the Bealey this morning at the usual hour, and arrived here at 3.20 this afternoon. It is our painful task to-day to add another name to the long list of muchesteemed friends who have passed their earthly career and left us to mourn over the fact that we are never again to hold friendly intercourse with them. Mr Daniel Hughes, farmer, Teremekan, after a somewhat protracted and distressing illness, last evening at Hokitika calmly and resignedly yielded up his spirit and passed away to immortal life. Mr Hughes was one of the earliest settlers on the West Coast, and so long as fifteen years ago settled down on the banks of the Teremakau river, about three miles from this township towards the sea. His kind, noble, and generous-hearted disposition in his dealings with men, his exemplary conduct through life, and his patience and resignation when assailed by the relentless hand of death, were themes of admiration alike of the stranger as of his most intimate friends ; and therefore it is that his loss is so generally and sincerely regretted. Nearly two years ago Mr Hughes retired from active business life, and made his home alternately at Kumara and Hokitika. Some months ago evidences of internal disease or cancer became manifest and he underwent recently a surgical operation for, if possible, its removal, but this was not successful, and he gradually wasted away and died. His remains are to be interred in the Hokitika Cemetery to-morrow afternoon, at two o'clock.
