BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall last evening ; present—His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Councillors Beam, Bur* ger, Campbell, Barnett, Galland, and Simmons.
A letter from the Waste Lands Board, relative to the Borough Reserve, was read.
A letter was also read from the Colonial Treasurer, stating that no returns showing the yield of gold within the Borough of Kumara had been received, and asking for information on the subject. A petition praying for the erection of additional lamps in the town, was read and received.
A letter from the dolonial Treasurer, asking for two copies of thb Borough balance-sheet, was read and the request acceded to.
The Public Works Committed was directed to act in reference to the question of farther lighting the town.
The Town Clerk laid on the table specifications for the supply of kerosene.
A report of the Public Works Conti mittee, recommending the removal of certain persons who had squatted on the Town Belt was read.
A discussion ensued, and it was finally agreed that the matter should stand over until the next meeting of the Council.
A report of the Reserves Committee was read, recommending that a former resolution, with regard to cutting timber on the Borough Reserve, be rescinded ; that bush licenses be issued at £1 per annum ; and that steps he taken for the completion of the necessary works on the recreation ground. On the motion of Cr. Campbell, seconded by Cr. Galland, the report was held over to the next meeting. A report of the Finance Committee was read, referring Mr Seddon’s application for compensation on account of damage sustained in connection with the late fire, to the Council for consideration, and that Mr Perkins’ account be passed for payment. The report was received, and Cr. Campbell moved that the sura of £lO be voted for Mr Seddon.
The resolution was seconded by Cr Galland.
After considerable discussion the motion was negatived on a division, the Mayor giving a casting vote. Cr. Simmons moved, without notice, “ That a Committee consisting of the Mayor, Cra. Campbell Barnett, and the
mover, be appointed to inquire whether the money for fencing the gnve of a late resident of this town, had been paid into the Council.
A discussion ensued, ahd the resolution was carried, but the Mayor intimated that for the future he should strictly enforce the standing order which forbable motions to be brought forward without previous notice. The Council then adjourned.
