SHOOTING EXTRAORDINARY.
The great glass-ball shooting match between the American shooter, Dr. Carver and an Englishman named Scott, commenced at the Royal Aquarium, London, on March 10, and was concluded on March 20. The stakes were £6OO, which was given by the manager of the Aquarium ; the winner to take £SOO, the loser £IOO. Each competitor had to shoot at 10,000 glass bal>s, 1000 every evening for ten evenings, or at the rate of eleven balls per minute. From the scores given below it will be seen that the contest was wonderfully close, first one leading and then the other until in the end the Englishman was beaten by only two balls. The following shows the state of the score at the end of each day’s shooting :
Dr. Carver. Mr Scott. March 10 ... 940 ... 935 „ 11 ... 1909 ... 1909 „ 12 ... 2882 ... 2883 „ 14 ... 3865 ... 3857 „ 15 ... 4834 ... 4833 „ 16 ... 5811 ... 5824 „ 17 ... 6805 ... 6812 „ 18 ... 7881 ... 7793 „ 19 ... 8789 ... 8789 „ 20 ... 9737 ... 9735 On Saturday the shooting was remarkably good, but as it was found towards the close of the evening that the supply of balls had run short, it was, after some discussion (when both were level 9688), agreed to decide the match by the next fifty balls each. Mr Scott missed three, and Dr. Carver, who broke 49, thus won by two balls. Each man only missed one ball out of the first 900 during the evening. It is calculated that to accomplish the feat each shooter has to lift to bis shoulder 66 tons 9cwt ; the force of the recoil was 758 tons 18cwt; and there was consumed 1 ton of shot, 3c\vt. of powder, and 2 tons of glass.
