There was no word of the Christchurch coach up to the time of going to press this afternoon. Hanlan the rower has issued a challenge to meet anyone in the world for any amount up to 10,000dols, and beat him by 15secs, in any race arising out of a challenge, to be rowd at Toronto, Canada, At the University boat race, the Ox ford crew were fresh at the close, but the Cambridge crew were greatly distressed. In San Francisco three thieves burst the lock off a luggage van, and proceeded to ransack the contents. They forgot to close the clcior, and a railway official seeing it open, put a new staple on the door and locked it. When the car was opened next morning, the thieves were found in it, and handed over to the police. Even Asia has not escaped an exceptionally severe winter. In Japan there have been snow-storms the like of which are not remembered to have occurred for 40 years. The snow is 10 feet deep in the fields and 15 feet on the hills.
