THE LECTURE NEXT WEDNESDAY EVENING.

jlO THE EDITOR.]

Sir—Some little curiosity lias been awakened and the question been oft repeated—" Which of aiv thor's will the Rev. Mr Flavell lecture upon?" Some say Thackeray; others Dickens ; and the names of Carlyle, Wilkie Collins* Disraeli, Biaddon; Woods, Marryat, and a host of others have been mentioned. My lady questioners are very anxious to know all about the gender; whilst a West Coast youth wanted to know if John Cross would be mentioned. This was a poser; so I took a Celtic way of answering, by asking him whether he knew Tim Bobbin. That youth intends to attend the lecture. Again, I have been asked by what new method have the admission tickets been printed? A friend of mine thinks very little of the new process—for he paid two shillings for one to a lady-distributor j and all he has in return is a blank piece of cardboard, three inches by four* Should this be sufficient tt admit persons, I should imagine there will be a crowded audience ; but I am afraid the church funds will not grow fat on pasteboard* Joking aside, I dot no like parsimony. From the reverend gentleman's ability as a lecturer, I hope he will have a good audience, notwithstanding the penuriousness of the committee, If the subject of the lecture be one of England's grandest daughters, who, under the title of a masculine name wrote works which are in every household and dear to every Britisher, then I say those who attend have a treat in store. The Rev. Mr Flavell knows full well how to handle his subject. Adam Bede. Kumara, May 9, 1881.
