Nelson, May 6. Two stacks, belonging to Coppins, Motueka Hotel, were destroyed by fire to-day. The supposed origin is that children had been playing with matches. The hotel was saved with difficulty. New Plymouth, May 6. The Supreme Court was opened today by Judge Richond; eight cases were for trial, but there were no crimes or heinous offences, all being the various forms of larceny. There are two cases of forgery, and one of embezzlement. William Cunningham, for stealing a chain from a brewer at Hawera, was found guilty and sentenced to 18 months' hard labor; Jas. Smith, for forgery, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment ; John Wills, charged with stealing a horse, was acquitted. The jury found( a true bill against Wilkinson, for embezzlement of money from the Govemment at Hawera. The case will be heard on Monday. Christchurch, May 6. It is said that Government are taking steps to prevent any land along the projected West Coast line being alienated or leased. This is in consequence of efforts to obtain portions of land on the route by certain individuals. Dunedin, May 6. There is no fresh news from the wreck of the Tararua. The Union Company have received a telegram from London asking if George Moore Fireau was a passenger by the Tararua, but there is no trace of his having booked.
The disqualification of Byers owner, Byers jockey, and horse Golden Crown, by the Auckland Racing Club has been endorsed by the Dunedin Jockey Club. Wellington, May 6. Whitelaw has obtained bail and been liberated.
The solicitor to the Education Board has given as his opinion that a member once elected Chairman retains that position so long as he continues a member of the Board.
Auckland, May 6. Beedell's brewery, North Road, was destroyed by tire this morning. It was burnt down once before about two years ago.
To-day the City Council Clerk was appointed a Mormon elder. He resigned his appointment and goes to Utah. *
Thomas Sunins, concerned in the Riverhead attempted murder, was remanded till the 12th. The girl, Annie Cailine, is not yet sufficiently recovered to be examined.
The brigantine Annie Bow, from Timaru, reports that she could see nothing of wreck at Little Barrier, while the Helena, from Oaraaru, reports this morning seeing a vessel apparently ashore on the N.E. corner of the island. A boat leaves to-night, with Captain Clayton, to investigate. George Rhodes, carpenter, fell on the asphalte pavement, broke his leg, and died in the Hospital. Tauranga, May 6. The charge against Edward William Borfield for attempting to rob the National Bank is proceeding.
