DOUBLE-AREA CLAIMS AND PROTECTION.
[to the editor.] Sir—ln dealing with applications for double-area claims in the vicinity of the sludge-channel, Mr Warden Stratford was determined to impose a condition that a right to carry a tunnel or tail-race through the claim applied for shall be permitted without any compensation being allowed. This is a very wise step, and will prevent persons having a frontage to the sludge-channel from blocking out miners wishing to take up the back ground. I am also pleased to find that he has determined to prevent the ground being monopolised by miners taking it up under double areas, and then applying for protection. All cases wherein pi’otection is applied for, unless strong proofs are adduced that the claim was worked before the sludge-channel commenced, are refused. In conclusion, I would earnestly hope that he will remain firm j he is on the right track, and becoming better understood every day. Boxa Fide. Kumara, May 3, 1881,
