Dunedin, April 29. The Cromwell Quartz Company cleaned up a month’s crushing, the result being 4510zs from 435 tons, A boat’s crew, comprising four men, have been left in an awkward plight on a small island off Taieri Mouth through the boat drifting away. They signalled by signs to the shore, and a steamer is going out from Dunedin to their assistance. They have been on the island since Tuesday. The Dunedin Industrial Exhibition promises to be a great success. The applications for space already exceed all expectations. Christchurch, April 29. The barque Thurso arrived from the Cape to-day. She reports that the barque Bulls arrived there on March 2. On the voyage she fell in with an iron barque called the India, bound for South Australia with iron and machinery. She was in a sinking condition, having sprung a leak and the pumps breaking down. The captain, his wife, and crew, numbering 17 were taken on board the Bulls, and the barque abandoned. The Hinemoa leaves to-night with 100 Maoris from Lyttelton, in addition to the Dunedin contingent. Auckland, April 29. A sailor at Riverhead stabbed a young girl about 19 years, of prepossessing appearance, who had been on a visit. Two railway porters and a stoker started in pursuit of the wouldbe murderer. They found him at the house, giving the girl whom he had a few hours before attempted to murder, milk, with a spoon. Upon being informed of the mission of visitors, he immediately yielded himself up. When arrested he confessed to having done the deed, saying, “ I stabbed the girl through love. Ross caused me to do it." Later. Annie Carlin, who was stabbed at Riverhead by a sailor named Sims, was brought to Auckland Hospital, and is likely to recover. Sims was charged at the Police Court with attempted murder, and remanded to the 6th May to await the result of the girl’s I’ecovery. Sims was second mate of the ship Wanganui, and Carlin was a passenger. TIMARU RAGES. Timaru, April 28, The Timaru races attracted a lai'ge crowd. The weather was beautiful.
